“Eroticism is a fundamental part of our private and public lives…It tests our individual and collective idea of what is “pleasing” but also of what is “decent” or “proper.”- Alyce Mahon
Who is to say what is offensive and what is not? The word “offensive” may be defined as a thing that constitutes a violation of what’s judged to be right or natural. Offense is subjective, and is an emotion and feeling that transforms over time.
The photographs I have created incorporate different scales of ambiguity as well as fantastical imagery. This analysis of the female body strips the individual not only of clothes, but identity as well, creating a sense of ambiguity and in some cases, abstraction.
No Offense focuses on exploring the form, angle, position and sense of erotica that a photograph can depict of the female figure. This is a creative study of sexual representation and expression that straddles the line between what is obscene and what is acceptable. I question, whether my photographic series is something that should be viewed within the privacy of ones home or framed in a public gallery. How would the meaning behind an image of an erotic female change if it were framed as opposed to being seen within a men’s magazine?
